Telugu Wedding Invitation Wording – Pelli Patrika Matter with Samples

Updated October 25, 2026 · 5 min read

A Telugu wedding invitation – the pelli patrika or subhalekha – follows an order families have used for generations: a prayer at the top, the families, the couple, the muhurtham and the venue, and a warm request to come and bless the couple. Here is that order, what each word means, and samples you can copy for a printed card, a video invitation or a WhatsApp message.

What goes into a pelli patrika – in this order

  1. A prayer at the top – usually “శ్రీ గణేశాయ నమః” and “శ్రీరస్తు శుభమస్తు అవిఘ్నమస్తు”, or the name of your family deity (for example శ్రీ వేంకటేశ్వర స్వామి).
  2. The inviting family – the grandparents and parents of the side that sends the card. Elders who have passed away are written with “కీ.శే.” (కీర్తిశేషులు) before the name.
  3. The groom and the bride – “చి.” (చిరంజీవి) before the groom's name and “చి.ల.సౌ.” (చిరంజీవి లక్ష్మీ సౌభాగ్యవతి) before the bride's name, with their parents.
  4. The muhurtham – the Telugu year, month, tithi, day, the English date, the time and the lagnam, exactly as your priest gives them.
  5. The venue – the function hall or the house, with the town. Add a Google Maps link when you share it on WhatsApp.
  6. Other functions – reception, haldi, sangeet or vratham, each with its own date, time and place.
  7. The request – asking guests to come with their family and bless the couple.
  8. Who invites – the parents' names, or “with best compliments from” relatives and friends.

Common words and what they mean

  • శుభలేఖ / పెళ్లి పత్రిక – the wedding invitation.
  • చి. (చిరంజీవి) – “may he live long”, written before the groom's name.
  • చి.ల.సౌ. (చిరంజీవి లక్ష్మీ సౌభాగ్యవతి) – the blessing written before the bride's name.
  • జ్యేష్ఠ / ద్వితీయ / తృతీయ / కనిష్ఠ – eldest / second / third / youngest (son or daughter).
  • పుత్రుడు / పుత్రిక, మనుమడు / మనుమరాలు – son / daughter, grandson / granddaughter.

Before you print or share

  • Copy the muhurtham, tithi and lagnam exactly as your priest wrote them – these are the lines elders read first.
  • Write names the way the family writes them, and check the spelling with both families before printing.
  • For guests who don't read Telugu, add one line in English with the date, time and venue.
  • Give the reception and other functions their own date and time, so nobody comes on the wrong day.
  • When you send it on WhatsApp, add the venue's Google Maps location – see how to send the invitation on WhatsApp.

Use this wording in a video invitation

In our video invitation designs you don't arrange these lines yourself: type the names, parents, muhurtham and venue into boxes – in Telugu or English – and the design places them in the traditional order. Late elders get “కీ.శే.” with one tick, and if you already have a printed card, upload its photo and the details are filled in for you. You watch a free preview before you pay.
